What are your aspirations in your soccer career, and what steps are you taking to achieve your goals?
My goals and aspirations for my soccer career are to win the Ivy League at Princeton, play at the professional level, and have the opportunity to represent Japan on the world stage. In order to reach these goals, I am training to improve my vision, passing, and acceleration off the dribble. As a midfielder, it’s essential to have patience and confidence on the ball and know when to be selfish versus when to distribute the ball. Quick acceleration on the ball is also very important for me, as I am not the strongest or fastest player on the field, so having the ability to quickly accelerate and get away from defenders becomes crucial. Also, going to high level training sessions like the ADP helps me test my skills in a fast paced, professional environment.
What are the biggest differences between your club and college soccer so far?
I haven't been able to have the full experience of college soccer just yet, as the Ivy League did not have a season last spring, but just from practicing with most of the girls from the team, some of the biggest differences between college and club soccer are the speed of play, physicality, and demand. I'm sure most girls hear this before going to college, but the level of play increases dramatically because you are surrounded by so many other great players that have the same passion for soccer that you do, making each practice intense and fulfilling. Even though my team was technically in an "off season" during the spring, the physical demand was drastically different, and juggling academics on top of having to perform your best everyday was challenging. While it could be stressful at times, being able to play at the next level has been such a great opportunity and experience, and it pushes me to be better for my teammates every day.
How is the Spirit helping you reach the next level?
By being invited to the ADP sessions, I am able to play with some of the best players in the region that are playing all over the country at the highest level. The intensity each player brings to every session motivates me to improve and push my limits. Having such a competitive and professional environment to train in with an amazing coaching staff has given me a glimpse at what it takes to play at the professional level, and I leave every session with the desire to continue to elevate my game.
How did BRYC help in your development?
My club, BRYC, helped me in my development as a player by giving me a multitude of opportunities to improve both as a player and a person. Since the 7th grade, the club has provided me with mentorship from alumni, help with my college recruitment process, and the opportunity to play with older age groups to expose me to higher levels of play. Additionally, having the opportunity to be the captain of my team taught me leadership skills and a sense of responsibility, and I was able to grow as a player and leader through that experience. Through the ups and downs of multiple years, BRYC taught me the importance of resilience and grit, things that I will continue to keep in mind throughout college and beyond.
What coach has had the biggest impact on your soccer path and why?
My club coach, Tyler Mishalow, has had the greatest impact on my soccer path. I have been coached by Tyler since I moved to the club in 7th grade, and he has supported me for the past 6 years. He's seen me grow as a player and person, and over the years he’s pushed me to be a better player and leader, and has provided me many opportunities to play with older age groups to help me improve.
What would you tell your 10 year old self if you had a chance?
I would tell my 10 year old self to have more confidence in myself and trust the process. Oftentimes, I could get in my head and shut down mentally during games if I continued to make mistakes; however, I’ve come to realize that making mistakes and experiencing failures is what helps you improve and is not an accurate representation of your capabilities. Having confidence is crucial for playing at a high level, and trusting yourself and the work you’ve put in to get that point will help you play at your best.
